The work of Andrzej Masianis is a phenomenon apart on the contemporary art scene—balancing a classical technique with an imagination immersed in myth, theology and fantasy. Based on the works available to us, one can form a picture of an artist who consciously builds his own visual language: hermetic, yet at the same time evocative.
The first impression on encountering Masianis’s paintings is of entering a world that resembles an illuminated manuscript or the vision of a medieval mystic more than contemporary decorative painting. The artist explores themes such as the Last Judgement, angels, demons and mythologies (Slavic, Norse), creating works that are more than illustrations—rather, visual narratives about the nature of the world and humanity.
In many works (for example, the angelic series or “Fighting Archangels”), a fascination with conflict is apparent—not so much physical as metaphysical: light and darkness, spirit and matter, the sacred and the profane.
This is art that does not so much tell stories as lead the viewer into a state of contemplation—one akin to an initiatory experience.
Between Gothic, Baroque and Fantasy
Masianis consciously draws on past eras—particularly the Gothic and Baroque—which is evident in both his compositions and the way he shapes form.
His paintings often bring to mind:
At the same time, there is a strong influence of fantasy literature—especially Tolkien—which introduces an epic, narrative quality.
The result is exceptional: a fusion of medieval spirituality and fantasy imagination, without lapsing into banal illustration.
His line is extraordinarily precise and controlled; it builds form through detail and often recalls graphic or miniature techniques.
This approach ensures that even the most fantastical scenes retain discipline and structure instead of dissolving into chaos.
The greatest strength of Masianis’s work is its coherence and distinctiveness. He is an artist who consistently develops his own language, combining classical technique with a personal mythology.
At the same time, this consistency may be a limitation for some viewers.
The recurrence of motifs (angels, judgement, the symbolism of death) means that his art calls for concentration and a sensitivity to symbolism.
