Unlike earlier eras, which could be neatly contained within clear, almost textbook-style categories, the 20th and 21st centuries introduce an entirely new dynamic: styles overlap, coexist and intermingle. Boundaries are fluid, and artists cross them deliberately, freely using the means at their disposal, much like a palette of colors. Yet despite this apparent chaos, we can identify certain movements and distinctive directions that have shaped the face of the modern age. Let us look at the most important of them—not as closed-off phenomena, but as living processes.
