Discovering sculptures offers an extraordinary opportunity to see an everyday phenomenon unfold through the creator’s eyes. It is presented to the viewer in simplified form, pared down to the elements the artist considered interesting and worth preserving. Take a horse in full gallop, for example: one person will notice the beautiful detail of its coat, another the striking, statue-like tone of its muscles. But what if the artist Edward Łagowski were among the observers? He would notice the animal’s momentum, its movement, letting details fade in favor of an overall impression – the very things we see in the horse frozen in stone. In another sculpture, the artist captured the long legs of a glasses seller, which intrigued him on one of the beaches in Italy; in yet another, the human body – he synthesizes the female body through simple forms. As he himself says: in art, the most important thing is to preserve not necessarily beauty, whether material or embodied in an idea, but what is interesting. Movement. A figure. Inspiration. He began discovering his life’s calling at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, in the sculpture department. Between 1964 and 1970, despite working across numerous fields of art – sculpture, painting, medal-making and drawing – the artist still finds time for many achievements, such as taking part in numerous exhibitions and competitions, where the sculptor has won many significant distinctions and awards. From the early years of Łagowski’s artistic career, sport has been a subject that inspires his creative work. This led not only to his collaboration with the Museum of Sport and Tourism, but also to numerous tokens of recognition, including at the Spanish Biennial “Sport in the Fine Arts” and in national Olympic art competitions. In 1988 and 1994, he even received the prestigious award of the Polish Olympic Committee – the Olympic Laurels. The sculptor has taken part in more than 100 national and international exhibitions, competitions and festivals. In total, he has won around 40 awards and distinctions – including the most recent, first place in the nationwide art competition “On the Subject.” The upcoming exhibition will be another in Warsaw, but the artist’s works have also travelled to Lublin, Zamość, Białystok, Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Wesoła, Sonsbek in the Netherlands, Nagyatad in Hungary, Saint Margarethen in Austria, Prague, Leipzig and elsewhere…
