Outdoor exhibitions have long provided a distinctive way for audiences to engage with art. Unlike traditional museum or gallery displays, art presented in the open air moves beyond enclosed spaces and enters into direct dialogue with nature and everyday human life. The exhibition series under the shared title “Sculpture in Gardens” perfectly embodies this idea, bringing artistic reflection together with garden landscapes to create a unique aesthetic experience. The project has been running since 2012, when we presented Zofia Kubicka’s Nude in the urban space at Okólnik.
Sculpture is an art form particularly well suited to presentation in open spaces. Its three-dimensionality, material presence and the possibility of viewing it from different perspectives give it new meaning in a natural setting. The outdoor exhibitions “Sculpture in Gardens” make use of this quality, placing works among greenery, trees, flowers and elements of garden architecture. As a result, sculptures are not merely exhibits—they become part of the landscape, helping to shape its character.
An important aspect of exhibitions of this kind is the relationship between the artwork and nature. Sculptures may contrast with their surroundings—in form, colour or material—or, conversely, blend harmoniously into them. Metal, stone, wood and modern materials enter into dialogue with the living matter of plants, changing with the seasons, the light and the weather. As a result, the exhibition is never experienced in quite the same way—each visit becomes a new experience.
“Sculpture in Gardens” is also an initiative with a social dimension. Outdoor exhibitions are inherently more accessible than traditional galleries—they are often located in parks, botanical gardens or public spaces, encouraging spontaneous encounters with art. Anyone can become a visitor: a passer-by, a tourist or a family with children. This democratization of art helps make it more widely appreciated and fosters aesthetic awareness among a broad audience.
The “Sculpture in Gardens” exhibition series is an example of a harmonious union of art and nature that enriches both the space and the viewer’s experience. Initiatives of this kind show that art need not be confined within the walls of institutions—it can exist in the open world, inspire, provoke thought and accompany people in their everyday lives. In this way, sculpture becomes not only a form of artistic expression, but also an integral part of the reality around us.
