The 40th anniversary of Janusz Owsiany’s creative work is an excellent opportunity to present his artistic achievements. Janusz Owsiany is an institution in his own right. A sculptor from the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, he created the sculpture park in Chociemyśl, international sculpture symposia, and many monumental sculptures in Poland (Głogów, Radzyń, Chobienia, Sława) and abroad (Razdorf, Eisenhüttenstadt, Halmshtaat, Skumeslovstrand, Laholm, Ostrava).
He combines stone with welded metal, giving his works ever-new shapes and meanings. He develops his sculptural series over time. One of the most important series he worked on for many years was Pilgrims. Initially, the pilgrims were figures carved into rocks, encountered along the way—moments frozen in time. Welded from steel and metal, the figures are concise, almost like pictograms. Often shown in pairs, they vary in size. These are pilgrims for whom life itself is the journey. Later, Janusz Owsiany began placing his pilgrims in boats. For the artist, the pilgrims in their boats cross the mystical river Styx, passing between the real and the metaphysical, between past and future, and overcoming successive barriers in life.
