The sculptures echo the stone reliefs of the Achaemenid Empire—their synthetic silhouettes, frontal orientation, and solemn dignity bring to mind ancient symbols of power and protective totems. Animal motifs, transformed into geometric forms, evoke the symbolism of the bull, lion, or griffin, present in palace decorations and in the Zoroastrian tradition, derived from the teachings of Zoroaster.

BIOGRAPHY

Piotr Bies, born in 1961, is a graduate of the A. Kenar State Art School in Zakopane and the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (Department of Sculpture); he earned his doctorate at the Department of Painting and New Media at the Academy of Fine Arts in Szczecin. Since 2003, he has been teaching sculpture at the A. Kenar State Art School in Zakopane.
